This week we decided to put our kalbi/galbi sauce to the test to create a dish loved by many, galbi-gui.

What is Galbi-Gui?

Galbi-gui is grilled beef short-ribs. As most would know, Koreans love their marinated, grilled meats. There are two types of marinated meat ; one is spicy, which uses mainly gochujang (red chilli paste) and the other is sweet & salty which is somewhat similar to a BBQ flavor. The recipe we have for you today is the sweet and salty flavoured one.

What is amazing about today's recipe is how simple it is. With the kalbi sauce, you dont even need to prepare much to marinade the beef.

Let's get started shall we?

Galbi-Gui RECIPE


Serves 2

400 g beef short ribs

1 large yellow onion

6 pieces garlic

3 large king oyster mushrooms

100g Nature's Nature Korean Kalbi BBQ Marinade (found in our online store!)

1 bunch green onions, chopped

Handful of lettuce leaves (or more if desired)

Cooking oil


  1. Peel, wash and slice your onion as shown in the image above.

  2. Wash your lettuce and put them in a serving plate.

  3. Peel and wash all your garlic, leave 4 of the garlic whole and mince 2 of the garlic.

  4. Wash and slice your king oyster length-wise as shown in the image above.

  5. Wash and score your beef ribs (score is to make small cuts on the meat to ensure the flavour seeps into the meat. To ensure the beef cooks through well and evenly, filet the rib by slicing down the middle of the ribs, along the bone as shown in the images below.

  1. Throw the minced garlic into a mixing bowl and stir in the kalbi marinade.


  1. Add the beef to the mixing bowl with with the minced garlic and kalbi marinade and coat the meat generously. Set aside and marinade for 2 hours or longer. The longer you marinade, the more the flavour seeps into the meat and the better it tastes.

  2. Lather 1 tablespoon of oil on the grill, once the grill is hot, put the marinaded beef on the grill. Grill on each side for 5-7 mins. Add the onions and garlic on the side for an extra smokey flavour.

  3. Grill the mushrooms on the side while waiting for your meat to be done.

  1. Plate your beef along with the mushrooms, sprinkle the green onions on top and serve with the lettuce.
